I need help with an essay, what is "prompt"?

I have to brainstorm for ideas, develop a thesis, write topic sentence, and organize my ideas... BUT identify the "prompt" --- I HAVE NO IDEA what to write here!!! pLease help.

  1. The first thing which popped into my mind when I thought of "prompt" was on-time or swift.

    Here's a dictionary definition:

    The prompt is what gives you the idea, the assignment for the essay. For example, a prompt could be 'Describe the law of gravity' or something like that.
