  1. Condolences, and applause for tackling a very challenging subject matter.  I think your essay will be best if you structure it like this:

    1: what happened

    2: your reactions

    3: stories

    4: things he taught you

5: what you learned from his death

I like splitting up the ideas of the 1st and 2nd paragraphs because they are related but separate topics.  Your reactions at the time can later be compared and contrasted with what you learned about yourself, and this will be easier if your reactions have their own dedicated paragraph.

You may find that your reactions naturally blend into stories (maybe memories were a part of your reaction?) and stories into things he taught you.

Remember to bring the stories and things he taught you to bear on your last paragraph (what you learned from the experience) -- how did the life he lived prepare you for his death?  How did these experiences you shared allow you to react to his passing and learn about yourself?  Did the one experience of his death come to represent ALL your experiences with him, or cast your past history in a different light?

Again, a topic that takes a lot of courage...my sympathies, and best of luck.

  2. 4th should be either about how your dad affected your life the most or 4th could be the best thing you remember him for...
