I have been told several times today that i need to feed my parakeets Pellets. I think i bought the wrong foods at the store yesterday. I bought The brand Tropical Carnival Gourmet Food. its not pellets. Could anyone tell me if i should use this feed and buy some pellet feed and feed them both or just feed The Tropical Carnival stuff or pellets? Could people tell me what they feed their parakeets? (by brand)

  1. NIXITY IS AN IDIOT!

First off pellets are just as messy as seeds..I know I've owned birds for years.

Second off birds in the wild dont live off JUST seeds, they also eat fruits and veggies. Actually most of their diet in the wild consists of fruits and veggies not seeds.

Third off pellets are better because when I was giving my birds seeds I had a lot of issues with sicknesses, my VET told me pellets are better, and when I switched my birds were much healthier and more colorful.

Another thing is seeds are high in fat which is VERY bad for your bird.

Pellets are the way to go don't listen to nixity.

That just goes to show what you know

  2. You don't NEED to feed your parakeets pellets.

If you think about it - would your parakeets EVER eat pellets in the wild? No.

The reason people have resorted to pellets is two fold:

    One: Because they're lazy

    Two: Because they're confused

Laziness because they think seed is too "messy" to clean up.

Confused because they don't understand the reasoning behind feeding pellets in the first place - and that it come about as a matter of convenience only.

People think they are the end-all, be-all in terms of food. "Nutrition, convenience, ease" all in one food.

    That's completely botched perception though.

While they do offer some nutritional value (assuming you can actually get the bird to eat it), the often contain a lot of artificial dyes and no ONE diet is going to be complete nutritionally.

It's better to stick to what they eat naturally, and supplement with fruits and vegetables, a vitamin supplement, cuttlebone, sprouted seed, egg food, etc.

  3. okay I have owned birds for 30 yrs and yes you can feed a seed and pellet mix as well as fresh fruits and veggies . No caffeine avacado or chocolate . those are deadly . I feed my quaker pasta w/o the spaghetti sauce . they enjoy lots of fresh fruits and veggies . good luck .

  4. Pellets are a good source of food but if your bird is not us to eating them it wont, there's nothing wrong with seed type food birds have been eating it for years if you do decide to switch over you have to mix it with his regular food and make sure he is eating pellets before you compleatly take his regular food or he will starve. Some people use it just because it is less messey.

  5. my vet has always told me to feed my cockatiel pellets. if the food you bought is for parakeets then its not a big deal if its eating it.you should feed you parakeet pellets (contrary to the other posts) because i had a cockatiel that died because it wasn't getting enough calcium and became egg bound. if your parakeet is a girl i would 100 percent reccomend pellets.
