My baby is 3 weeks old. I've had had so much trouble with breastfeeding. She had a bottle confuse , then she didn't take my breast and now she feels asleep everything on my breast!!!!. She lacth on for 5 o 7 minutes then she feels asleep . I put her on her bassinet and she wakes up!. I try for over 1 hour or 2 and at the end she seems hungry!!!! so I've been expressing milk. I'm so sad....I don't know what to do. I had a person coming to help me ......I tried undressing her, a cold wash cloth, I don't know what to do....:(

  1. My son used to do the same thing.  It takes a lot of patience and perhaps additional help from a lactation specialist.

  2. Don't giv any bottle, soother till your baby is at least 8 weks and have given time to learn to latch on properly. Just keep what you're doing - undress her, cold cloth, latch on, cradle her, rock her, maybe even try having her sleeping in your bed next to you. feedings at 3 weeks should be longer than 5 - 7 minutes so don't put her down, keep waking her till she has a complete feed. Just hang...

  3. Have you seen an lactation consultant? That would be my first step. I breastfed for 14 months and my daughter had a lot of health problems as a 2 month premature infant and I used nipple shields and expressed mostly during the first month. Dont' give up you two will get the hang of it.

  4. you know my daughter had the same problem , i think it was worst. she just didnt even want my breast at all and would start screaming when i put her close to me. but i tried for 3 weeks and a half!!! i would just try giving it to her for 15 minutes and if she started getting really upset i would stop. one day she just started taking it and i havent stop since(shes 6 months old now) i know that if babies fall asleep is because your milks flow stops so when she starts sucking try compressing your breast and that will help you get your baby fuller faster. good luck

  5. My son was the sameway. My midwife told me too tickle his foot, tap his arm...so he will wake up and keep feeding. I know how you feel you must be sooo exhausted. With the bassinet, my son was the sameway. Its just that they are so used too being in a nice comfy warm womb for 9 months...so it doesnt compare to a cold bassinet. I was told, if u put one of your clothing that u have worn that day and let them sleep on it. When my son finally went into the bassinet, i tried to make it as comfortble has possible for him. I even put a pillow in there for him too sleep on. But I dont know if you would want too do that. I hope this helps you!

Dont give up, you have made it this far already!

  6. I had the same exact problem. Try wearing nipple shields (they pull your nipples out so that it is easier for your baby to latch on. Alot newborns tend to fall asleep on the breast. It is very frustrating, but just keep at it. It took my son a good month before he got it down pat. Don't get discouraged, you are doing what is best for your baby. When you take her for her 1 month check up, they will tell you whether or not she is getting enough by her weight gain. As long as she is gaining weight, it doesn't matter how long she nurses. She may just be a very "effective suckler", which means she is getting enough in that short period of time. Keep offering the breast and try not to give in to the temptation of giving her a bottle...unless the doctor reccomends it. Good luck, you are doing a wonderful thing for her. Congrats!

  7. Breast compressions!

Here's a great video which explains how it works:
