Your ship has steamed 1856 miles at 18 knots using 545 tons of fuel oil. The distance remaining to your next port is 1978 miles. If you increase speed to 22 knots, how much fuel will be used to reach that port?

  1. Can't give you the answer as you will have to do the work yourself.  Here's a hint.  Doubling the hull speed of a displacement boat will require 4 times the power.  This is assuming that it does not go into hull planing.

  2. Are you expected to ignore the effects of increase in drag directly proportional to increasing speed?

  3. Unknown. We know the fuel consumption at 18 knots, but the increase in fuel consumption with speed is complex, and depends on a lot of factors such as hull design.
