Everyone is able to sing, and it is really unnecessary to take lessons. Warm-up with a simple scale, and buy a tuner, so you can see how in-range your voice is. You should also learn proper singing techniques, so you can do a bit of research from the Internet or some books. Do not try to sing modern pop/rock and roll songs, because it is quite easy to sing them. Sing songs that are out of your range, so you can hear your voice key.
