  1. It is a huge commitment on your part.  My wife and I tried it for a semester until our daughter got into a different Middle School.  We got plugged into FLAME (families learning art music and education) community group through a local church to get her involved in things we couldn't teach well and also to socialize.  We did purchase curriculum and also and advantage CD pack from Best buy to help us in teaching.  You may need to find time away if you are going to do this full time as you will not find time for anything else.  I would also recommend that you keep a daily log to chart progress.   One last thing, it is my understanding that some school will allow you to borrow the text book and curriculum for what they teaching that year.  Talk with the principle or social worker.   Good Luck.

  2. There are some school boards that offer free online courses for home-schoolers.

You won't have the freedom to make your own curricula, but will have the opportunity to make each subject at your own pace and with your own learning style.

I don't know where you live, so I suggest you ask your local school board, library or ask a homeschool support group.

The link I'm sending is from Surrey Connect, a system that we can use here in Surrey, BC (Canada). It's completely free. You can navigate it to see how it works and then look for a similar one.

  3. The on-line academies are expensive.  The Internet has many great websites but also has lots of dangers for kids.  I have used  an Internet control tool to write web lessons which allow safe access to the Internet,  Kids can get to the websites you select but cannot go beyond.  The tool is free.  Maybe it could help you?  Check out www.xyzttt.com

    Good luck

  4. Visit this web site for general home school information, and many links to other sites that may be of some help.

Personally I would not do the on-line versions of home schooling, none of these are "free", unless you want to do public school @ home.

You can obtain many low cost home school materials from many sources, and use the library, and the Internet to ofset other costs.

Join a local home school group for support, and activities for your child to participate in.

These families can help with loaning books until you have figured out what works best for your family.

The book samaritan gives free curriculum for those who need it, however you have to sign up early for next school year.

There are many websites that provide free worksheets, and on-line learning opportunities without being tied to an on line school.

    Here is a long list:

This site does require a $20.00 yearly fee to have full use of all their printable materials, but it is well worth it.

You can check them out for free, but it is a lot of curriculum in one place.

  5. Hi, Congrats on your new endeavor!  It isn't easy, but you will find this very rewarding. We have been homeschooling since December 2004. My son is now on 8th grade.

There's more than one way to approach this, but believe me, it's easier than you think. I have used several curriculums, most of them $$$$. We did Sonlight (literature-based, but $$$, Bob Jones University Press (textbook- based, also $$$), and Pearson (Modern Curriculum Press - very good for math up to 6th grade, runs little advanced though, I find their prices very reasonable).

This year, someone introduced me to the Charlotte Mason philosophy, it's literature-rich and very, very broad (I love this philosophy!). There are no textbooks, except for math and possibly science, depending on what you choose. We use Apologia and free books online.

If you're interested in this type of education, go to amblesideonline.org, they provide a free Charlotte Mason-based curriculum (book lists and schedules) and you can find most books online. It is GREAT if you don't have the time to go through a ton of websites for free resources to create your own curriculum. It's basically done for you. They have many Yahoo! Groups providing tons support and books to download.

If you're interested about learning more about the CM homeschool philosophy, Charlotte wrote a book series (6 books) detailing everything and there also other authors, such as Catherine Levison, who have written about it and how you can apply it to today and your life, and even how to create your own curriculum, choosing 'living' and very attention-engaging books. They call it the "No twaddle" education, meaning that nothing your child will be reading is dumb-down.

There are no tests if you don't want to. You know your child has mastered what she has learned through re-telling (aka 'narration').

My son is doing incredibly well. Hope this helps!

  6. First, there are some free online schools, but they may not be available in your area. Check with http://www.k12.com, Connections Academy, then try doing a search for _yourstate virtual school_ and see if anything else comes up.

Do know that you don't need an online school. You might consider looking into the homeschooling laws where you live and doing your own thing.
