i bought a horse a few weeks ago and the guy said she had her shots and coggins and i'm not sure if she's been wormed or not and i can't get in touch with the man i bought her from. so, would be okay to worm her even with the possibility that she already has been or would that be harmful?

  1. Hello,

IT won't hurt to worm again!  You need to make certain you get your horse on a regular deworming program.  We worm every 2 months.

You also need to rotate the products (ingredient) to get the best effect.  Worms can become resistant to ingredients and this is why it is recommended you rotate.  Also some wormers are not effective on every type of worms.

HAVE fun with your new horse, and if you haven't ever wormed one by yourself ask someone who does it themselves to show help you and show you how its done!

EDIT****  I forgot to mention that I ALWAYS re-vaccinate our new horses!  This way I know they were actually done and when.  MY vet said it won't hurt anything if it has been a month or longer.  THE vaccines are MUCH cheaper than trying to heal up a deadly disease they prevent SOMETHING you should think about too....

  2. It is ok to worm again but I would recommend using any type of ivermectin paste at least for this first time just because you're not sure.  Ivermectins are the safest to use.  Moxidectins on the other hand (like Quest, etc.) can be very toxic if given an overdose.  So my recommendation again is to use an Ivermectin this first time.  Then you can change once you're on a regular worming schedule.  You should also rotate wormers, use ivermectin one time, then a pyrantel paomate, then praziquantel, etc.

  3. Worm her. I worm my horses once a month because they are exposed to many other horses. I have never had a problem and have been doing it since the paste wormers came on the market. My vet advised me that it was ok.

  4. If it's been a few weeks since you bought the horse it is ok to do it, provided the horse is in good condition.  If the horse is not looking healthy, I would consult the vet for advice before doing it.  It isn't always just about how long it's been and whether the worming product is safe,  but may also involve not killing massive numbers of worms all at once which could colic your horse.

  5. It's perfectly fine to deworm her, you should just to be safe. It won't harm her at all. And whoever said it's not for beginners to do is wrong, it's not that difficult =]. Don't waste $150 by calling your vet to do it..

  6. It wouldn't hurt. And worming a horse is not that difficult, you can do it yourself. Just make sure that you have the correct wormer for the season. There are different flys, and worms at different times of the season. Luck

  7. it wont hurt your horse at all to deworm her again.

in fact i just dewormed my horse that i have had for about a month, not knowing whether or not he had been dewormed.

  8. Yes go ahead and worm her again. The only wormer that could hurt her if re-dosed too soon is Quest. Any other type it is fine. I would suggest you start with Ivermectin. Ivermectin will kill the whole spectrum of worms. Then rotate with another wormer like Pyrantel Pamoate. I worm my horses every six to eight weeks.

  9. You should go ahead and worm again. It takes several tubes to overdose a horse anyways. Heres an informational site  that shows you how to worm a horse step by step!

  10. Ask your vet and have you vet do the worming. It is not something for beginners to try.
