I have a 8 year old high functioning autistic child. He is in the 2nd grade. We are having some problems with Math. I have a way of helping him with addition and subtractions by using the numbers with small dots for ones and bigger dots for tens. For instance the number 9 would have 4 big dots on the 9 and one small dot which equals 9. The big dots count as two's. But I have not figured out a way to help him in multiplication's. Does anyone have any suggestions are have a way they teach their child Math? I do have a suggestion for Spelling which my son does the pyramid. We take a word like ball. Example:

b

ba

bal

ball

This helps my son remember how to spell. Just a suggestion for those out there searching for some help with education.

  1. I have a high functioning autistic son also but, he is 15 now.  The way I taught my son is say it was 2X3.....we drew pictures of each 3 sets of 2 apples or 4X3....4 sets of 3 squares.  He learned that way.

  2. The touch math cirriculumn has programs for multiplication and division as well as addition and subtraction. It has been a long time since I have used this program but it basically involves touchign the dots also. One thing to work on concurrently is the count bys.

Teaching your child top count by 2's, 5's, 10's then on to 3's , 4's etc. then they can use the touch math muliplication rather easily if I remember correctly.

  3. I work at a school for autistic children and with math we use alot of "counters" for example use small rubber animal figures or fuzz balls (small). We teach using the ABA Method which is based on repetitive trials. Try using your environment to help him learn math as well, using food or household items. There are many teachable moments throught out the day, you just need to take advantage of them!

Try using alot of positive reinforcment with your son as well. Reward him continuosly throughout the lesson. I wish you well.

  4. Have you tried a multiplication charts and used something to trace it so he can memorize it. My son has an excellant memory and we are going to try this. I like the ball thing

  5. what does the school use?  you need to adopt the same method to stop any confusion
