Hi, I currently have a membership with ISI and USFSA, and in ISI I am in FS4. I can do all my single jumps, and I am starting to learn my axel. I have a couple of on and off ice axel exercises, and can land whole axels off ice. But just to boost my confidence do any of you skaters have any on and off ice axel exercises that helped you tremendously with the landing of your axel? Thanks!

  1. Don't worry, you will get it soon. Practice doing them off-ice in gym shoes. Then ask your coach to put you on the harness. They both train your muscles to do it right, and you will have it soon. Don't be afraid to fall. I took a bad fall last year, and I was afraid to do it. I had to over come that fear, and now I am landing them fine. I would also suggest getting a waxel pad if you fall a lot. They help me too. You should also do warm-ups, like waltz loop, waltz jump with 5/10 loops, waltz loop backscratch loop, once arounds, once around back scratch. Walk it through also.Start by stepping as if you were going to do a waltz jump, come up on your toe, and then step to the other foot and do a small back scratch. If you have a problem landing on your toe, hop up and down on your right foot toe pick 5 times. Do that 3 times, then do your axel.

    Good Luck, and Be Patient!

It took me forever to land my axel. Don't get mad if it takes you longer than other people to get their axel. Some people have an easier time jumping than others. Just keep practicing and you will get it.

Oh, I have one more trick from learning my axel: I would pretend like I was doing a waltz jump, and once I jumped up, I would cross my leg over. I wasn't doing an axel, but it helped me get the feel for it. If you fall a lot, you could try a waxel pad. It protects your bottom from getting hurt from falling.

    Good Luck!

  2. ask your coach to watch your axel she what shes says who knows mabye your arms aren't tight enough of your puting enough toe pick just ask her it really helped me.....

PS what i put was what i was doing wrong.... I CAN REALATE

  3. My favorite trick is to do a waltz jump, loop, then backspin, all in a row. Then, try to do the waltz jump, then the loop, except do the loop before you land your waltz jump.

  4. The axel takes most people a year and you shouldn't worry if other people get it faster. The best things I can tell you. DO TONS OFF ICE!!! This jump is lots about muscle memory. Also I know everyone tells you this but you have to practice tons of waltz into backspins. You think you did enough?? Trust me you didn't! I practiced for 2 hours straight on a public and I got it the next time I went skating. Finally the last and most valuable tip. After every axel you attempt that is not great, go into a backspin and jump kick it out! TRUST ME IT WORKS AMAZINGLY!!!! I got my axel in a month doing all these things. And also don't be afraid to fall!

  5. 1*video taping myself doing them(yes it was awkward to watch but it really really helped)

2*make shure you are getting enough height in the take off.

the axel is basically a waltz jump backspin in the air.

think off snapping your legs together to get more spin into the jump.

one of the main things people do when learning the axel is swinging their legs.

DONT do this.it just causes more problems. instead think of "jumping and stepping onto a platform" doing this will help get the height into the jump [:

    hope this somewhat helped.

and good luck. it took me awhile to get my axel but once i had it i never lost it.

  6. a great tip i got when i was having problems with my axel is when u go up dont let your elbows pass the middle point of your body.

    it really helped me.

    GOOD LUCK

  7. I would just practice actually doing axels in your tennis shoes. It helps on ice more that you would think. I did them off ice a lo and it helped me land them. It gets your body used to the motion you have to go through to actually do it on ice. So when you do it on ice you will be better off. That's just what I did to help.

    I Hope That Helps.
