Ok, so i have a cat thats 6 years old and is a shy male. and i recently just bought a 1 year old female cat. now my problem is, they just dont get along and it's been a month. the younger cat bullies my older cat by hitting him and/or chasing him around my house. my older cat is afraid of her. He tries to smell her and she hisses at him. Does anyone know what i can do for them to get along? My male cat is a short-haired breed and the female is a long-haired breed, if that helps...

  1. As a vet. It takes tons of months to get cats to like eachother, but it sounds like they wiill never get along, long hair breeds and short hair breeds can get along so it isent that

  2. Feline territoriality is always going to be a problem. I must agree with everything that "Intuitivechick" had to offer as advice. One other thing that you might want to try is a false scent trail. Get some old cloth and wipe it all over each of the cats scent glands and then rub that onto the other cat and see what happens. I have tried it myself, and it worked.

You might like to try going to:

and looking up the article about how to settle a new cat in a home that already has a resident feline.

  3. It's difficult when you bring a new cat into a house that only had 1 cat before.  I would separate them (two rooms, two cat boxes, 2 water\food dishes) and spend equal amounts of time with each of them.

Put them together on equal territory (1 shared room) for small amounts of time and just sit there with them.  Once they both understand that you won't play favorites and that they are equal, it should simmer down.

Plus spend alot of time with the male, as cats like people have different personalities.  Is there a reason you got another cat?

I believe she knows he's shy and not agressive, so she's just trying to set him straight.  Sad but true.

    Hope that helps.

  4. I'm not sure if this will work with cats, but with bunnies you sit them next to each other and just pet and talk to them calmly. Some cats just don't like each other though.
