My conscience always gets the better of me, and whenever I do something wrong, I feel extreme guilt, and sadness. I recently did something and I got so bad that I just wanted to curl up into a ball and die. I feel emotions 10X worse than everyone else, it seems. Do I have a mental problem? If so, what is it called? Any advice would be appreciated. oxoxoxox

  1. well if that's how you feel then you really need to think twice before doing something that you may regret. you are probably more susceptible to depression than others and you may need medication but i really wouldnt recommend it unless you really need it

  2. Have you ever heard of OCD? Check it out, might help you.

  3. If your thoughts are bothering you and getting the better of you, see site below to learn what you can do about it.

  4. That isn't really your conscience. If it were, it would make you want to do something to fix the problem. Or it would make you avoid the problem. Your conscience does either of those two things. It does cause guilt, but the guilt it causes doesn't make you do that.

It sounds like it could be low self-esteem. My sister has that problem, and she told me that she is more likely to feel guilty or stupid over mistakes. Also, it could be because of people in your past, like teachers or parents. Perhaps one of these people were very critical of you in the past, to a point where you finally felt extreme guilt over something small.

    I don't think it's necessarily a mental illness.

  5. I think you are probably being too hard on yourself. You must allow yourself to make mistakes after all you are only human like the rest of us and no one is perfect. It's great you care so much about doing the right thing but just for a wk tell yourself you will let yourself make mistakes and do things wrong and not feel bad about it. Maybe you could keep a diary during this time and write down how you are feeling. If you say you will only do this for a wk it will take the pressure off of having to do it forever and you can review your diary after and look at the good points for being a little easier on yourself. You don't have a mental problem no more than anyone else...as I said no ones perfect so don't get hung up on that just focus on being as kind to yourself as you try to be for other people. After all why should you be less important!
