  1. Run an HDMI cable to your tv for the picture. The tv will have no influence on the sound as you will run the cabling for the sound to your receiver.

  2. I'm not overly familiar with the PS3, but my xbox 360 actually ports the digital audio straight out the back.

So, if your PS3 is set up the same way, it won't have a thing to do with your television.  If you can run the digital audio out from your PS3, you'd run it to your receiver, which would have your 5.1 or 7.1 set up connected to it.

  3. Your TV has a left & right speaker. Expecting a very basic stereo sound system built into a TV to support 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound is beyond what this TV is designed to do. You will need a Home Theater system to take full advantage of the 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound audio recorded on a Blue Ray DVD.

Additional Details: Running an HDMI cable to your TV can not compensate for the basic stereo speaker system built into this TV but can carry the 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound audio signals to your TV. Use the Optical digital audio output on this TV with a fiber audio cable to feed this signal to your Home Theater Audio/Video receiver and you will get the full 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound audio. This configuration will give you true 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound regardless of the source (i.e. PS3 Blue Rays or digitial TV reception via cable, satellite or over-the-air channels). Just remember to turn off the TV's speakers in the audio menu of your Samsung TV.
