i got a budgie two days ago :) i know that it's very normal that he isn't eating or drinking or really moving because he needs time to get used to his cage and me and stuff. he didn't eat the first day i got him. but the next night he ate and drank and moved around because i heard him while i layed in bed. when i woke up i noticed his p**p was a little watery. i went to the pet store today and when i came home i saw that he had been eating his p**p because he had it like stuck under his beak! is this normal? (i did get him from a "bucket o budgies")

  1. i don't think he should be eating his c**p, but when i got my bird, he wouldn't do anything for the first week, the best thing to do is stay away from him for a couple of weeks until then go near him.

can you please answer mine? i'll love u for ever and ever!:

  2. Replace his food regularly. Most of the "stuff" you see in his food bowl are husks, outer coverings of the seeds, and he has already eaten the seeds. Hence, with no food, he's probably reduced to eating his own p**p. Another thing, if you got him from a "bucket of budgies" type of large-scale source (pet stores), then there's a chance that he wasn't raised properly and his current behavior is a result of that. I'd recommend taking him to an avian vet, visit http://www.aav.org to find the nearest one. Otherwise, give him enough appropriately sized toys and change his food more often.

  3. yesh it's normal dont worry!

All of the budgies I had did this, so it's perfectly normal XD

  4. It's very common for animals to eat their stool as it allows them to reproces it in order to get more nutrients. In the psitti family you mostly see this in smaller parrots, budgies, parroletts and cockatiels.

If you are only feeding him seed, that may be the problem.  See if he'll eat some wheat grass (sometimes labled pet grass in pet stores), or some leafy greens.  You could even sprout some of the seed you are giving him and feed him that instead! Or for a treat some millet.

Watery stool could be caused by the stress of a new enviorment, not enough fiber in his food, or he may be ill.

Go ahead and offer him wheat grass (and if he'll eat them other veggies too) along with millet and in a few days it should clear up.  If it doesn't keep a very close eye on him for illness.

    Signs of illness:

-Always standing on both legs, never perching or sleeping just on one.

    -Crust around the beak ornostrils.

    -Red dots on his skin

-Sitting at the bottom of the cage for long periods of time

-Panting for long periods of time

    -Cloudy eyes

-A sudden change in activity or eating habits.

    I hope this helps!

  5. Watery bird p**p is okay, and some times my birds eat there p**p..lol..sometimes it gets stuck on their foot. When I got my birds I put them in their cage and covered it up with a sheet the first day, to keep them calm and give them tiime to get used to their new cage.
