I just got 2 kittens, they are 7 weeks old and doing great. They are litter trained, eating kitten food, playing and napping all day. They are even getting used to me and being affectionate. I've only had them 4 days. The problem is, one of the kittens, Elle keeps sitting in the litter box. She just goes in there and lays down. Sometimes rolls around, but mostly just lays in there. Why does she do this and how can I get her to stop without discouraging her from using the litter box? I feel that if I keep taking her out of the litter box she may think she's not supposed to use it, and I don't want that, but I don't think it's good that she's sitting in there either.

  1. LOL be thankful she is just sitting in it.  I have 4 foster kittens who thinks its a play ground.  If she is eating, playing etc and acting fine, she will find another spot to sit in.  She is still young.

  2. Hi you didn't say where you got the kittens. If you got them from a shelter then that could most likely be why. If you've ever been to one many are sitting or laying in their boxes. The kittens that I got from our stray momma, well they loved the texture and feel to the litter. All cats are different. Some will roll in it because it's just natural just like rolling in the dirt or on a scratchy carpet is.

  3. where did you get them from? if you adopted them for a humane society/animal shelter its not at all unusual. cats at humane societies are usually kept in small cages right next to their litterboxes so a lot of them either lay in it or play in it. your cat will eventually grow out of it, its just what she is used to right now. as long as she is not coming out with p**p all over her just let her be.

  4. When my oldest cat is scared she will sometimes hide in the litter box. It might be sort of a comfort to your kitten to get into an enclosed space. Try giving her an alternative such as a box with a blanket in it. Hopefully, she will stay out of the litter box.
