This is two part question:o) Ok I have 3 puppies, and I was going to buy a hard plastic toddler pool to put them in, but I can`t find one because its so late in the season. Any Ideas what to use? The mom is a jumper so I know the fold up metal pin will not work. I was considering a playpen. What do you think? Any ideas? Ok second question. How soon can I let the male (Dad) go near the puppy`s? I have never had Dad on site. Help please!! Thanks a bunch!!

  1. Depends on the male, some males HATE pups and it'll be 6+ months before its safe.... On the other hand some are great puppy sitters from the time pups are weaned!

PS apparently Petsmart discovered about kiddy pool whelping pens the one near me had them day before yeasterday

  2. this is what happens with unplanned backyard breedings.  A kiddy pool is not a bad idea, neither are play pens and that such - but remember to put down carpeting for ur pups otherwise you'll end up with swimmers rather than walkers by this i mean, the pups need friction to prop themselves up and walk around when they're about 2 weeks old, if it's slippery they will learn to waddle around on their stomach instead thus end up with swimmers - doing this for too long will only let their bones fuse into that location - so becareful and put down carpeting for them.  how big is the mother dog that she can jump a pen? you want the area to be low enough so the mother dog can step in and out easily, but keep the pups inside.  Furthermore, the female dog usually does not allow other dogs to see her pups, it's not that the sire is carrying diseases, it's more because she is over protective and may end up accidently killing them when she tries to protect them.  for my dogs, the sire can see the pups at a distance, but can interact with them only when mom feels comfortable and not growl at him.

  3. To answer your question the daddy can be around the pups from the very first moment they enter the world but you should always be with him just incase as men can be unpredicable : ) and the mother will always be very protective and may attack him the first few times this is fine it just means she is a protective mother which is a good thing. If this happens I would suggest you keep daddy bear away from the puppies until you wean them. And then give introducing them another go. Oh and make sure dad is healthy before going near the puppies such as being wormed.

I would suggest barricading off a corner in your house or on you veranda (if you have one) then mum can jump in and out but the pups will have to stay in and while this is the case daddy might have to spend some time on a chain and perhaps alternate of a night time the pups and mum stay in side and dad has time off the chain out side and then during the day dad is on the chain and the pups and mum are in the barricade. There is many different solutions but just remember you don't have to lock mum in with puppies as if she is a good mum they will only have to squeek and she will come running.

Hope this all helps if not I tried. Good luck. : )
