I'm a prospective English teacher, right now I'm correcting some tests. One of the questions is the following:

What does she like to have for breakfast?

According to the book the right answer is

She likes to have orange juice for breakfast.

But some students have answered:

She likes orange juice for breakfast.

or:

She likes orange juice.

Are they correct?

Please, please I really really need some help with this!

Thank you very much!

  1. they are all correct.  to have is part of a preposition. Having to have makes orange juice the subject of the preposition. But "she likes to have orange juice for breakfast" and "she likes orange juice for breakfast" are the same, while the third one, you can have orange juice for any meal.  the first two are just style issues, and should not be pressed upon.

  2. I think the reason why the book says, "She likes to have orange juice for breakfast."  is that it makes it parallel to what the question is asking.  The other answers would be correct too.

  3. They're all correct.

Next time tell them to be more specific and state the answer so that it includes the question in it.

  4. Hi, I visited a website, Buzziboy,

    http://www.buzziboy.com/

Its a website for teachers and students, check it out, may helpful for you and your students.

  5. "She likes orange juice for breakfast" is perfectly fine as a response.

"She likes orange juice" is fine as a response to the question and in the context of it ( since it is the question that specifies the liking FOR BREAKFAST ).

English is a rich language and there cannot be taken to be only one way to say something.

  6. i think they're wrong cuz they dont explain enuff about liking orange juice with their breakfast.
