Question:

I need help with replacing an interior door slab?

I'm trying to replace a door I broke. I bought a 32" slab from Lowes and it was too small. So then I bought the next size up...or the only size I can find everywhere....a 36" slab. Now that one is 2" to big. Is there a such thing as a 34" slab? If not, Is there enough room on the back edge to shave off 2"? What do I do? We live in an apartment with limited tools and funds and it's getting frustrating. Thanks for your help

  1. There is a 34" door, it is more commonly known as a 2'10" x 6'8". There is likely a bevel on one edge, that is the doorknob/latch side, and the narrow edge swings into the jamb first. The other edge is the hinge side, the easiest way to gain the hinges is by clamping the 2 slabs together and marking them out accordingly. An interior slab is generally hollow, the outside edges contain blocking. If you were to cut as much as 2" off, you would remove all of the blocking on that edge. If you were to cut 1" off each side, you would not have enough blocking left for the good attachment of the latch screws or the hinge screws. That is why you need the proper width for your door slab.

  2. Measure the size of the frame top to bottom and side to side. Take that to the store and then ask then to get you a door that size. With the solid timber doors they will be able to cut off an inch on each side. With a hollow core door it is not really possible as the edges are about an inch wide. Door makers  make custom and odd size doors the dealer can find out. Let the supplier work for you.

  3. Yes they make 34 " doors. May have to order.

    Good luck..
