how do you use a rain gauge?

how would you test soil permeability?

and how to you get the elevation of an area?

  1. Rain gauge collects water and has graduated markings to show amount of rain collected. Usually calculated over a 24 hour period.

    Soil permeability is measured by putting a sample in an open cylinder, adding water to the top and measuring the time for a specific amount of water to filter through to the bottom.

    Elevation can be measured using a GPS (satellite navigation) or traditional survey equipment (theodolite)

    It can also be read off a topographic contour map if you know the location.
