I have some technical questions about Word. I just got Word 2007, but I am very confused.

-Just what is a hard return, and what feature will let me see it?

-What are the default tabs, and what length are they set?

-What feature doesn't allow the last line to be printed at the top the next page?

-What is the most important difference between block letter style and modified block letter style?

-If I wanted to flush both sides of the margins, what feature would I select?

-How do you I adjust a column's width in a table?

-If I wanted to shade a row on a table, what would I click on first?

-How do insert a page break if I wanted to make a new page before I filled up any given page?

  1. 1.  A hard return is created every time you click Enter.  To see all the hard returns, click on the "paragraph symbol" icon on the toolbar - Click Home on the menu bar, then you'll see a "backwards P" icon.  This icon allows you to see all the hard returns, tabs, and spaces in your documents.

    2.  The default tabs are set at every .5 inch.  Click the tab button on your keyboard, you'll see that your cursor jumped half an inch (look at the ruler bar).

    3.  I don't understand this question about not allowing "the last line to be printed at the top of the next page".  Please clarify.

    4.  Block letter doesn't have any indents or tabs - everything is flush left.  Modified block letter has indented paragraphs.

    5.  To "flush both sides of the margins", click the Home button on the menu bar.  Then on the paragraph section of the toolbar you'll see a button for "justify" (several straight horizontal lines).  Click this button to fully justify your paragraphs.

    6.  To adjust the column width in a table, hover your mouse on a column border until you see a double arrow.  Then click and drag the border to the left or the right.

    7.  To add shading to a row in a table, select the row, then right-click and select Borders and Shading.  Click the Shading tab and choose a color or pattern.

    8.  To insert a page break, click Ctrl+Enter.
