  1. The Greeks established Greece and there isn't an 'established' year but over 3000 years of culture, history and ethnicity that went into their identity as a people and as a nation.

  2. MK is not correct. The new Greek state's constitutional name is Hellenic Republic but i don't know if it is recognized officially by the other states and for which exactly uses. Greece was named by this name, because the big powers wanted this name. Greeks first propose the name Romania and then the name Hellas, both rejected, so they decided the name that was known from the ancient times up to today to the west, Greece. From the ancient times Greeks were known by this name to the westerns, while to the east were known as Yunans (Ionians). The name Hellenes was used only by the Greeks to describe them selfs.

  3. Greece as culture and civilization is not ESTABLISHED....how can a culture be ESTABLISHED????The greek civilization is by far one of the most ancient ...but it never had a state(=kratos)

first there weare the poleis-krath meaning cities-states of Athens,Spatha etc. Then the Macedonian Empire where Alexander The Great wanted to spread the Greek culture in The East and he made it...After the alexandrina xronia(=the Alexander Ages) followed many different periods  such as the Roman Empire and after this The Byzantium Empire and after this the Ottoman Empire....So as you can see there was not a Greek state but there was ALWAYS the greek civilization(Don't forget that Byzantium was deeply influenced by the Greek culture...and Alexander The Great was Greek too!)The Greek culture underwent through all these periods and it was NEVER disappeared! It remains ALIVE until TODAY!

But the first Greek state was established by Ioannis Kapodistrias in February 1830 when he signed the protocol of Independence of Greece from the Ottoman Empire....So in 1830 we had the First Independent State of Greece and Kapodistrias became the first head of the Greek state!

    GREEK CULTURE AND CIVILIZATION>>YES

OFFICIAL GREEK STATE >>>>NO UNTIL 1830

  4. Cort, next time you put up links could you kindly read them first?  What you have written and what your links say are different!

As for the question, I am not going to get into the ancient reece bit, I think it has been answered quite nicely Modern Greece became an entity since the revolution of 21st of March 1821. First state to actually recognise Greece as a state was actually the dominican republic. In the early 1830's it was at last recognised as a state by the european powers though they imposed a german as the king of greeks. Typical!!! It has been independent ever since apart from the german occupation during WWII

    HOMER

  7. Greek culture exists at least since 2100 BC. Although around 1300 BC start the historic times of Greek culture, since Linear B, the first "alphabet" of the greek language is being used. The first fulfilled written works are Homer's "epi", which describe the greek nation with the names Danaoi or Achaeans or Argites. The word that is used today for the greeks in greek (Hellenes) was the name of Achilles' greek tribe then. Some years later(not many - Hesiod actually considered Hellen as the ancestor of all hellenic tribes) , "Hellenes" was widely used to signify all the Greeks, although they were divided in city-states. Then Alexander's Empire (for a decade until 323 BC), his heirs' Hellenistic Kingdoms (until 146 BC in Greece), the Roman Empire (until 1453 AD) and the Ottoman empire followed. In the meanwhile greek culture and language, roman citizenship and orthodox christianity were merged into one nation who called themselves "Romioi"=Romans. The western catholics called them (incorrectly and on purpose) "Greeks" and the Ottoman and Arab rulers "Rum". In 1821 the nation of the Romioi revolted (once again) against the Ottoman Empire and tried to gain the western sympathy. Rennaissance had already inspired the admiration for greek culture and that's why the Romioi altered their name to "Hellenes" (as they spoke "hellenic") to remind to the Westerns their ancestry. The Westerns finally helped the Hellenes to succeed in their revolution (Navarino sea-battle - 1827) and found the New Hellenic state (Hellas) in 1830.
