Question:

I need help with the maya?

My teacher was trying to help me, but i still suck at it, really. So, does anyone know any tips and tricks for helping me?

  1. Sometimes it just takes a different description of the movement for it to make sense to you.  I know that happens to me.

    Maya (Reverse Vertical Figure 8)

    Sometimes it's easier to break it down into almost 2 separate movements, 2 vertical circles (1 circle on each side)

    Begin - stand in basic position

    make sure your knees are soft

    (you will have problems with this movement if your knees are too straight when you begin)

    Vertical circle with right hip

    raise your right hip

    push your right hip out

    lower your right hip

    bring your right hip in (back to start)

    Vertical circle with left hip

    raise your left hip

    push your left hip out

    lower your left hip

    bring your left hip in (back to start)

    You can start by practicing just a single circle with one hip several times, then work on the other hip.  

    Once you can do the vertical circles, individually, with each hip, connect them, alternating a circle with your right hip, then a circle with your left hip.  As you practice, the movement will get smoother.
