In terrestial vertebrates, what is the advatage of having the surfaces for for oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange embedded deep in lung tissue?

  1. One advantage is that pollutants, microorganisms, and microscopic debris will be filtered out before reaching the alveoli for gas exchange. Only very small ( i think 2 um?) particles can reach the lungs.

    so the answer would be to filter the oxygen..


  2. The lungs offer a much larger surface area than any other structures, such as skin or gills.
