My mom made me watch a coworker's kid. She was 11 and absolutely would not obey me. She wasn't real bad, but still - she did what she wanted when she wanted and showed no respect for our house or my things. (dirty feet on my white stuffed animals, broke a chair in the kitchen, told me how ugly my toes were...) I ended up having to tell her mother that I could not watch her any more.

I watched a 4 year old who talked back and thought he could do whatever he wanted. His parents gave me permission to spank him, but I don't want to do that to someone else's kid. So I would pick him up and stick him in time out, put up toys out of his reach, and let him know that his parents were going to hear about what he did.

I think the first thing you should do is talk to the parents about what forms of discipline they see as acceptable. If the child is small, you might have to show her that you are big enough to make her do stuff and are not afraid to do it. (like big enough to pick her up and make her sit in time out)

If she is too big for you to handle, and if her parents can't talk her into being good - you might just have to go find another kid to watch.

I assume that it goes without saying that you should have started out by treating this girl with respect, showing her attention, and finding fun activities for her to do. But if it doesn't - make sure to give that a try too! Some kids are bad simply because that's the best way they know of to get attention.

You have to let her know that you are in charge.  Try taking away some of her priviledges if she acts up.
