  1. Simple geometry.

                      |\

                  a  | \  c

                      |  \

                      |   \

                      |    \

                      -------

                         b

    To find the length of the hypotenuse, square the two sides & add them together.  This will give you the square of the hypotenuse.  In this case, side b is heading west to the library (20), side a is going north to the store (15) & going home is side c (?).

    a^2 + b^2 = c^2

    15^2 + 20^2 = c^2

    (15*15) + (20 * 20) = c^2

    225 + 400 = c^2

    625 = c^2

    25=c  (25*25 = 625)

    He drove 25 miles home from the grocery store & drove a total of 60 miles on his errands.
