Today’s system of classification reflects evolutionary and genetic relationships between species and groups of species.

    Especially at the higher levels, Domain, Kingdom etc.

    Domains particularly reflect differences in the genetic make up of cells, and I understand that the kingdom of Protista may possibly be replaced by kingdoms of Protozoa and Chromista on the grounds of their different genetic make up.

    Further down the taxonomic tree, tradition seems to hold more sway, e.g. Storm Petrels are still classed as Hydrobatidae, and ordinary Petrels Procellariidae, even though it is the Latin root, procella, which means storm. (Ocean of Storms, on the Moon, Oceanus Procellarum)
