Q:

You are looking out your window during a storm and see lightning strike a tree. It takes the sound about 6 seconds to reach you. Knowing that sound travels at a speed of 330 m/s, which is the best estimate of the distance from you and the tree?

a.) 55km

b.) 2km

c.) 20km

d.) 5.5km

please show how you got the answer. thanks.

  1. What do you need to know to answer this question?

    1. How far something travels is the product of its speed and how long it travels.

    What do we know? We are given the speed of the sound: 330 meters per second. You look at the possible estimates and see that they are given in kilometers per second. You reasonably estimate that 330 meters is about one-third of a kilometer. So you know that the sound travels about a third of a kilometer every second or about one kilometer every three seconds.

    We also know that you heard the lighting six seconds after you saw the flash. So we can estimate that if the sound travels about one kilometer every three seconds, then it must travel about two kilometers in six seconds.

    Now we look at the list of answers to see if one of them is close to two kilometers.

    That is how I would choose answer b.

  2. Multiply 6 sec by 330m/s, seconds cross off leaving you 1980 m. Divide this by 1000 because there are 1000 m in a km. This gives you 1.98, approx, 2km

  3. dist between you and the tree=6(330)=1980m=1.98km

    this is approx 2km so b is the ans.

  4. Distance will be = Speed of Sound * Time it takes

    = 330 * 6 = 1980 Km

    Answer is (b) 2 KM

  5. sound travels 330 m/s and 1980m/6s so when converting from m to  km you divide by 100 which gives you 1.98 km which rounds to 2

  6. 330x6=1980m. .  The tree is approx 2k away  1000m=1km

  7. d = v x t

    d = 330 x 6

    d  =1980metres

    :)

    **d = distance, v = velocity and t = time

  8. d= speed x time

    d= 330m/s x 6s

    d= 330*6m

    d= 1980m

    d= 1.98km

    to the nearest km

    d= 2km

    answer b

    hope that helped
