Teams at advanced level would assign "base" position to each player. For you, middle back (zone 6) would be your "base" [edited] when you are in back row (as you stated that you are "middle back").

During the game each team rotates at side-out, so that you are not always at your base when serve happens.

If your team is serving, you can get ready to switch, so that as soon as the server contacts the ball, you can move into your base.

If your team is serve-receiving, your coach would design some plays to move players into their base positions, in one rally or in several depending on the quality of the serve and the rotation you were at, so that there could be serve receive 1, 2, 3... The bottom line is to get you to your base as soon as possible.

The purpose of assigning a base position for each player is to make it easier for team defense and offense, as you would know which area you need to cover, which player is available to attack the ball when first option is not available, and how much help you can get from your "neighbors".

  2. There are many different rotations, it depends on what your coach wants. Base isn't the same for every team, and they use different strategies. I would ask your coach in private or watch someone else play middle back and see what they do.

  3. Its hard to explain on here

because most coaches have different positions

I had to learn 5 different rotations.

If you're embarrassed in front of your team mates.

Talk to the coach in private.

If you don't talk to him/her now, you'll be really embarrassed if you play a game and don't know what to do..

    :)

your team mates should understand because everyone has been there.

Everyone has to learn. In my first year i was so confused i would just stand in the middle of the court until someone told me or pushed me where to go..

    :)
