  1. Wireless is a very broad area these days. To many it simply means they have WIFI and use wireless at home. That requires a DSL or Cable or some other form of home internet - even satellite but then add a wireless router and you have wireless, at least around your home.

Then there is go anywhere, or near anywhere wireless. That is from cellular carriers (in most cases) and uses a totally different form of wireless. You can get wireless cellular cards from nearly any of the cell providers. It does vary greatly by provider what speeds you can get but the units work nearly anywhere - at least anywhere there is cellular coverage. T- Mobile, AT&T, Verizon, and nearly any other cell carrier has this.. again it varies by carrier what you can get.

Then there is truly use it anywhere satellite wireless. Not the least expensive thing for most of us as the monthly bill may be a couple of grand! But it is truely use anywhere in the world wireless service!

There is also wireless home service which replaces cable or dsl and provides a wireless connection when those two are not available or you simply want wireless service instead. You get a signal at home to an antenna mounted outside in most cases and you can connect a wifi router inside to use again.. wireless at home..

so what kind of wireless?  It makes a difference to the answer?

ADD: OK if its just for around the house and visiting relatives. then WIFI is the way to go. Get a DSL/Cable/Fiber internet connection and add a wireless router for home!  Then when you visit you can use your wifi at hot spots like McDonalds, Starbucks, etc and it your relatives have a wifi router you can use that too!  That is the least expensive method.

  2. Basically as long as you have high-speed internet in your home, attach a wireless router to it and connect your computer to the router.  There is really no looking at company's etc, linksys and d-link i suppose for the hardware...

  3. What kind of Wireless do you want?

    Wireless Network for home:

    - a wireless router like WRT54, etc

    Wireless Network for office:

    - Access points

Just try to upgrade or change the firmware with DD-WRT: http://www.dd-wrt.com/ This one could boost the speed, signal and more security for your network.
