im applying for a job as an appraisal aid, how would i write an objective for this description? Assists the public by phone and in person in interpreting assessment laws and procedures, filing exemption claims, resolving problems and answering inquiries; provides clerical support for Appraisal Aides in the processing of property statements, exemption claims, division and combination of property, assists in processing veterans, homeowner, church and welfare exemptions by checking accuracy and completeness of forms; prepares mailings of annual statements; pulls and prepares annual statement records for processing; sorts and routes mail, responding to routine correspondence under direction; enters and makes changes and corrections to records and on-line data; operates a variety of office equipment, including copier and computer equipment; performs miscellaneous typing and filing. (Essential duties may vary from position to position within classifications. Reasonable accommodation will be made when requested and determined by the County to be appropriate under applicable law.)

I mean, this is stupid to have to write an objective.... its kind of obvious why someone applies for a job right?

  1. Yeah, it's dumb. See what ya think about this one...

To obtain a position in a firm that will utilize my educational and professional background and allow development of my abilities to their fullest potential.

  2. You aren't required to have an objective on your resume.  An objective tells the person reviewing your resume what kind of job your looking for, so if your work history is in clerical, but just got your degree as a Medical Assistant your objective would highlight you wanting a medical assistant job rather than a clerical job, this is also a good place for you to say if your looking for FT, PT, or Contract work. If you do your objective states what kind of job your looking for.

    Example:

    OBJECTIVE

Experienced Secretary seeking full time employment where I can make a positive contribution.

So you see your objective is about you and what you are looking for, you don't tailor your objective to fit a job description.  You do that in your cover letter.  More commonly on resumes people start out with a brief summary of their qualifications.

    Example:

QUALIFICATION SUMMARY (or you use no header here)

Dedicated and patient-focused Healthcare Professional with proven strengths in customer/patient service, staff development, and hospital client production. Exceptional capacity to multi-task: manage numerous, often competing priorities with ease and foster the provision of superior customer/patient service. Administrative, clinical and referral experience including admissions, client services, staff development, and education with hands-on experience for a wide range of Laboratory Services. Widely recognized as an excellent care provider and customer/patient advocate. Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills; superior accuracy in patient history, hospital procedure and diagnostic codes.

Then you go into your education - if you have one or it's stronger than your work exp.  If your work exp is stronger than your education you go into your Work History.

Google "Resume Samples" or if you background is mainly say Customer Service google "customer service resume samples" you can see a ton of other resumes so you know how to do this type of format, plus you can look at them for more professional wording to use on your resume.
