I am trying to write a climatological forecast with a cold front approaching from the west. The average weather for this area during this time of year is overcast with fog and drizzle.

  1. If it is drizzle and fog then you are probably in the warm sector of the low pressure. The cold front coming from the west will lift that up, giving place on the surface to colder and drier air masses. What you can expect then is an increase in pressure, veering of the wind direction, increased visibility, wind gusts, cumulus, cumulonimbus and ultimately, thunderstorms. You might also see a squall line coming in front of the cold front. That is usually a strong wind increase that surprises many sailors at sea! ... don't ask me how I know! :-) It's not such a problem when they come during daytime because you see the clouds coming very fast and if you are observant, you get the sails down before it hits you. But, at night ... I have somewhere a photo showing the kind of damages it can do, if you want. :-(
