Throughout history conflicts and change have often led to many changes to the lives, values and the way people view their world. In the book, the prince by Machiavelli, many different conflicts in the book led to changes in the lives, values and the way people view their world. Niccolò Machiavelli's The Prince is a blunt political pamphlet concerning the various kinds of principalities, military affairs, the qualities of a Prince, and Machiavelli's views on Italy's political status during the Renaissance. Machiavelli uses many specific examples throughout the text both ancient and current to Renaissance era. To understand the book more completely and Machiavelli's reasons for writing The Prince, it is needed to understand Machiavelli's life and the times he lived in.Machiavelli wrote this book as a practical guide for ruling and also to gain the favor of the ruling Medici family, offering advice on how a prince might gain and to keep power.

  1. Three big helps on writing: 1) a paragraph should not contain more than, say, 3-4 sentences; 2) a book title should be capitalized and in italics if possible, if not possible then use quotes; and 3) you need to pay attention to your grammar, specifially commas.

"In the book, the prince by Machiavelli,"

In the book, "The Prince", by Machiavelli [ITALICS PREFERRED OVER THE QUOTE MARKS]

    Suggestion for paragraphs:

Throughout history conflicts and change have often led to many changes to the lives, values and the way people view their world. In the book, the prince by Machiavelli, [SEE ABOVE] many different conflicts in the book led to changes in the lives, values and the way people view their world.

Niccolò Machiavelli's The Prince is a blunt political pamphlet concerning the various kinds of principalities, military affairs, the qualities of a prince [NOTE:PRINCE IS NOT CAPITALIZED HERE SINCE IT IS A GENERIC USE AND NOT NAMING A PARTICULAR PRINCE], and Machiavelli's views on Italy's political status during the Renaissance. [PREVIOUS SENTENCE IS VERY LONG...MAKE IT 2 SENTENCES] Machiavelli uses many specific examples throughout the text both ancient and current to [THE] Renaissance era.

To understand the book more completely and Machiavelli's reasons for writing [<--ADD COMMA AFTER THE LONG PHRASE]The Prince AGAIN ITALICS OR QUOTES FOR THE TITLE], it is needed to ["IT IS NEEDED TO" IS AWKWARD AND WORDY, CHANGE TO "ONE MUST"] understand Machiavelli's life and the times he lived in.

Machiavelli wrote this book as a practical guide for ruling and also to gain the favor of the ruling Medici family, offering advice on how a prince might gain and to keep power. [ANOTHER RUN-ON SENTENCE, MAKE THIS INTO TWO SENTENCES.]

There really is no premise, discussion, and conclusion here.  However, take the FIRST sentence and use it as your conclusion.

    So it would start:

In the book, "The Prince" by Machiavelli, many different conflicts in the book led to changes in the lives, values and the way people view their world.

And it would end emphasizing this:

Throughout history, [NOTE THE COMMA THERE] conflicts and change have often led to many changes [YOU ARE USING CHANGE TWICE IN THIS SENTENCE, CHANGE ONE TO A SYNONYM] to the lives, values, and the way people view their world.  Many of our world leaders and elder statesmen consider it the most influential book they have ever read.  Machiavelli's "The Prince" was not only relevant to the times in which he wrote, but continues to be significant to us today.

    ...............................

PS You aren't really telling me anything Machiavelli SAYS in the book.  Instead you dance around it.  I'm not sure what your assignment was.  Is it "What is the contextual basis"?  If so, then telling me why Machiavelli wrote it and when it was written is okay.

However, this book is still not only one of the most influential of all time (so is "Art of War"), it is also still one of the most controversial.  I don't see you quote from the book or tell me what sort of advice Machiavelli gave...even one example would be good.

Also, you say to understand the book more fully, you must understand the times in which he wrote.  Where are the reasons why this is true?  (Since it is still widely read and understood without being a Renaissance scholar, what are today's readers missing out on?

  2. Well, the purpose of a conclusion is to reiterate your thesis statement and summarize your points that support that thesis. Based on reading your introduction, I can't tell what your thesis is. I think once you clearly define the thesis, then you can work on the conclusion.

  3. That seems a bit much for an introduction. I personally would divide that up into two or three paragraphs.

As for the conclusion, maybe something like:

As one can see, The Prince was a writing that was highly influential in the political views of its time. By writing it, Machiavelli contributed greatly to the history of (what country?) and forever impacted societies and thoughts, even in today's culture.

  4. Since you have your introduction, your conclusion is simple. The introduction tells the reader what to expect, the conclusion tells the reader you told them. So rewrite your introduction in a different manner and let them know that you have told them in you essay what you promised to tell them in the introduction.
