A thesis is one or two sentences which summarize the main point of what you want to say. In your situation, it would summarize the article you're reading.

If you were reading a newspaper article, the headline of the article most probably would be the thesis of the article, although the these should be expressed in complete sentences and not in the abreviated language that headlines are noted for.
