we are going to the blue ridge mountains in October. We will be camping and hiking. I need to know the best hiking shoes that are not horribly expensive! Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  2. Hi Gretch

What boot you ultimately will buy is based on a couple of factors:

    1) The terrain that you're hiking on

    2) How much pack-weight you're carrying

    3) The weather that you plan to be hiking in

The boot that you need to carry 75lbs up and down the scree slopes and rocky trails of NH

is a very different boot than you would need for cruising along the AT in Shenandoah NP w/ a 25 lb pack

    4) Never ever buy boots by mail order because they HAVE to be personally tried on

The best way to do that is to walk for about 4 miles in whatever shoes you walk in

Go to your local backpacking store and wearing the sock combination that you will be hiking in try on your boots

Don't get enamored with brand names and high tech toy doo dads

At a certain level of quality all brands  are pretty much equally  good

The most important thing to know is that all feet are  different and it's really important that you get the right boot for YOUR feet

You may also want to consider a high quality construction boot like Wolverine

For what it's worth in the 35+ years that I've been hiking I've only used four different brands of boots

Dunham's>b/c I had easy access to their factory reject store

    Limmer, Merrel & Vasque

    Have fun trying them on

  3. My Hy-Tek's are not expensive, but I just bought a second pair since I like them more than the expensive ones I've used.  The trails you will be on are fairly forgiving, so any comfortable, light weight or mid-weight boots that fit well are probably a good choice.

  4. ***** sporting goods or MC sports
