My kindergardner has to dress up as something from the book The Hungry Caterpillar. I am short on cash and time. They only gave me a weeks notice. The list of acceptable costumes they sent home is: caterpillar, plum, chocolate cake, ice cream cone, lollipop, cupcake, apple, strawberry, pickle, swiss cheese, sausage, leaf, pear, orange, cocoon, salami, cherry pie, and a slice of watermelon. Does anyone know of a quick, easy, cheap, way to make any of these?

  1. This answer is kind of like the previous one but much simpler. Dress your child in a white sweatsuit and white sneakers. Cut a big circle from a sheet of red posterboard. Cut a hole in the middle for your childs face and voila instant lollipop. For extra flare add a pair of white gloves and tell your child to keep their arms to their sides as much as possible.

  2. I would do a caterpillar. Use a green sweat suit for the body (check walmart or kmart, they usually have them for pretty cheap), green stocking hat for head- cut holes for eyes and to breathe and pull over their head, you can use felt mouth, eyes, etc, green socks and gloves or mittens for hands. For most of the food, old cardboard boxes cut into appropriate shapes and painted different colors can go a long way. The dollar stores or Goodwill stores are usually a great resource to find cheap things for art-type projects

  3. Lollipop

Cut out a large round piece of cardboard with a whole in the middle large enough to more that fit your child's face including chin to allow for padding. Pad the edges of the card board with fabric scarps or something soft enough but would easily cover the edges for comfort. Then color the lollipop to look like one in the book. Use paint or if the card board is white markers or crayons would work too. For the lollipop stick, buy two pair of inexpensive stocking tights (or regular), one white and one black. Cut them in half so you have each leg separate. Basically cut the groin of the tights in half then sew them back together with one leg the opposite color. Sew a black leg to a white leg. Make sure the toes are pointing the same direction, so match a left side with a right side. If you mess you  have another white ad black try again. Then the white leg will be the lollipop stick. Have fun!
