I'm a peer tutor, meaning I go to one class with a special education student every day. For my final in that class I am to created an educational based activity for any of the special education students that may ever decide to take the general education class. The class I'm workring on incorporating in my activity is Food Decisions - basically it includes very basic information on food groups, cooking, utensils used in the class to cook, etc.

Any ideas on how I can go about this? I've thought of Bingo, Jeopardy, and making up a game - but it all sounds like something everyone will do.

Help or input in general is greatly appreciated :]

  1. For some of our students we take pictures of the objects and make little booklets.

Use a digital camera and you can import the pictures into word documents if you want to add identifying labels.

We laminate the books so they can be taken into the kitchen, or workplace. Break the booklet into parts.

Since it takes multiple exposures to ensure learning, your activity could include you identify the items aloud and have the student repeat. Then you add another item. Repeat procedure naming both. You can make it a work in progress by using a three-ring binder. When you need to introduce another item you just snap a picture and add it to the notebook. You can use clear plastic sleeve protectors instead of laminating.

Or, you can take in actual items similar to the pictures and have the student identify them by matching them to the pictures in his/her personal booklet.

Or, you can use the book and quiz the student having him/her identify the answer to your question by showing you the item in the book.

  2. If you reconsider jeopardy, you might want to check out the build your own jeopardy style classroom game at the link below.

Another thought is to use real objects and create a sort of matching / sorting game.  What object goes with what?  And/or sort the food into the food groups as part of the activity - use some large construction paper and draw the pyramid - have the kids sort the food onto the pyramid correctly.  You might be able to find some plastic food at a dollar store...

  3. Well you could take them to the kitchen and teach them thing there. You could also have a nutritionist talk to you're students.

  4. Have the students put the food in to the right food groups, ask them to tell/show you how to use a certain utensil, get them to cook a simple meal. It doesn't have to be something involving the microwave or oven etc. It can be as simple as making a sandwich or a cup of cocoa.

You could also set up a shop in the classroom and get the students to purchase the food they think is healthy. This could work for the utensils as well. You tell them you want a utensil used to stir something or to flip something and then they have to go and purchase the correct utensil.
