1. Check with the German-Canadian Chamber of Commerce at http://www.germanchamber.ca/ . You'll find a lot of info on their Web pages and I'm sure they'll be glad to help on any further questions, too.

A few notes about Germany becoming a country as this is a bit difficult to say:

The current Federal Republic of Germany was founded 1949, after World War 2, however, the first all-German country dates back to 1867, when the North-German Confederation was founded. Before that, Germany was a bunch of small, independend states, duchies and kingdoms. Between 1867 and 1990, there existed half a dozen constitutions:

    - the German Empire 1871

    - the Weimar Republic 1919

    - the Third Empire or Third Reich (n**i regime) 1933.

    - From 1945 until 1949, after Germany was defeated in World War 2, the country was under occupation.

    - In May 1949 the Federal Repulic was founded in the American and British occupied sectors (that's West Germany), followed by the German Democratic Republic in the Sovjet sector in October 1949 (East Germany), between them the legendary Iron Curtain and the Berlin Wall.

    - Finally, Germany regained full sovereignty after World War 2 in October 1990 with the unification of East and West Germany.
