Question:

I need information on Chetumal and Tuxtla Gutierrez Mexico?

I plan on moving to Mexico sometime probably in November of this year, but I'm not really sure yet where I want to move. I was interested in these two areas. I'm 21 and hope to spend a year or two there, maybe more. I'm not a big partier or socialite. I don't want anything fancy, nor can I afford it. I've heard that you can get apartments between $100-300 a month, but I've gotten different responses as to how nice these apartments are. What do you get for that price in these areas?

Are they nice towns? How low do the rents go? Is it easy to get around without a car? How is the standard of living in these areas? Can you get reliable high-speed internet?

Any info would be helpful!

  1. I was just in Chetumal in March and it's a well laid out city with bus service. They have great restaurants, and I thought a big plus was the closeness to the ocean.  It was warm in March so I imagine its very warm now. I too am curious how you happened to pick this city.

On this trip we visited Campeche for a few days and found it to be very nice.  Didn't seem as warm and is probably smaller then Chetumal.

  2. I'm familiar with both cities and you should have no trouble finding inexpensive places to live in either of them "how nice these apartments are" is, as I'm sure you must realize, a subjective question.Nice to you and nice to someone else can be two entirely different things. The difference between 100 and 300 dollars a month can be defined by any number of things in Mexico such as location, amenities, condition, whether or not it is furnished or even if it has indoor plumbing etc. You don't have to worry about finding anything fancy under $300 I would be interested to know how and why you came to choose these two cities and whether you have even traveled in Mexico.

They are not really "towns".They are both cities.Nice??? They are both typical Mexican cities.Tuxtla has a population over half a million and I would guess Chetumal is close to a quarter million. The rents can go lower than $100 but I really don't believe you would be happy with anything you found in that price range.I'm sure Chetumal would have high speed connections but I'm not sure about Tuxla even though it's the larger of the two but it's probably available there too.Yes,both cities have efficient and inexpensive transportation available. It should be obvious that the standard of living will vary depending on where you live in each city, just like it would in any other city in the world.
