I'm 14 going on 15 and I suffer a bad case of depression. This stops me from going to school and from going out with friends. I'm interested in starting a home schooling program/learning from home. A friend of mine does a program like this where he gets sent the work from a school. Can anyone help me with finding out how to get into a program like this? I want to continue learning but school isn't an option.

  1. Getting work from the public school is called "homebound" and is usually for children who 1) have an official diagnosis and 2) have a diagnosis that keeps them out of school. There are also state home programs, where you sign up as a homeschooler, and you receive textbooks  (not from the schools, and not the same work, but it's usually free or minimal cost)

Depends on where you live if those are options for you. Homeschooling can be done quite easily regardless of where you live. Ask your parents to research at www.nheri.org for more information about your state laws.

  2. well what I am doing right now is im going to a school where they give me the work and I do it at home and i hand it in to them and stay there for about 2 hours.. now you dont "have" to stay for 2 hours.. But its ideal because you need a certain amount of hours inorder for it to count... other then that its great.. i am getting all 90's and its WAAAY easier then a regular school... i use to skip alot and was into drugs and all that when i was a freshman and a sophomore, which caused me to be behind 2 years.. this program has helped me LOTS and im doing great.. next year i will be a junior.. and i hope to get into a good university.. you do end up missing your friends but you become ALOT closer with your family.. and there is less drama! good luck!

oh and the program that im doing as an alternative program.. i go in from 1pm to 3pm.. normally dont stay for the full 2 hours.. more like 15 mintues lol!

  3. Since this is a medical issue you could ask you counselor about the school's home bound program.

You could also use a virtual school:

Or try independent homeschooling.  WIth homeschooling all you need to do is find out your state's laws:

And then choose a curriculum.  Many teenagers prefer a complete home school curriculum or computer based curriculum.  Here's some info on both:

    Good luck!

  4. I dont think that being in a depresion is a good reason to drop school and start homeschooling... it sounds like u give up easily...unless u have some serious reasons for doing so

  5. The first thing I would do is talk to your parents about this.  Depression is serious and I hope your parents are working with you and a professional.  Your parents would also have to approve of your doing homeschooling.  If they agree that that is the best course of action, you have several options.  Some schools might offer an option in taking "Independent Studies."    There might also be some charter schools in your area that offer that kind of program.

If you don't wish to be part of the "school system" at all, there are many other options.  There are many different kinds of programs depending upon your religion, the way you like to learn, whether you want an accredited "school," etc.  Tell us a little more, and I can help you to narrow down your options....

  6. There is a free program in some states (here in Washington, it is called WAVA (Washington Virtual Acadamy)-  it is through the school system and is basically online public school.

you do not have to have any reason to sign up and use this program, you just need to enroll like you would at a public school.

Last year, my elementary school child and high school child did WAVA full time-  his year, I am homeschooling and supplementing with just a few WAVA courses-  You  have a couple of options on how to do this.

Through this you have teachers that you will be abl to connect with by phone or email, you will have access to a virtual classroom where you will be able to have live chat with teachers and classmates and have live lessons online.

The best part is that all of the materials are free and shipped to you for free.  Some materials must be returned at the end of the year, but whatever you need is provided for you during the school year.

There are other homeschool programs that are really good-  I like the ABeka program, Liberty Christian Acadamy or oyu can put together your own curriculum but you do need to pay for your materials.

Through WAVA the testing is also free.

WAVA is available through a program called K12

go to this link to see what states K12 programs are available in and get more information about the program:

  7. There are many online high schools available. More and more, there are ones that are free (based upon your state of residence). You can see some through the link below.

As for the depression part, I hope that you ahve talked with your parents and with a mental health professional. Depression can be a very serious thing.
