I need information on horse ownership costs in Ireland.?

I would appreciate information on the cost of livery, vet, dentist, farrier, insurance, tack, actual horse, extras and anything else I might have forgotten.

(Only for Ireland and in Euros please)

(Please describe and specify types of livery, insurance, horse, tack etc. )

I understand that to give me an accurate estimate you will need to know what I plan to to do. I will just be riding as a hobby. It is unlikely that I will be competing. I am at intermediate level.

Everything appreciated so please reply.

Thank You.

  1. very expensive, anywhere in the world horses are very expensive

  2. Hey,

I live in south dublin full livery generally costs between €100-€150 a week. This would in most places include a schedule similar to this:

AM; Feed, check over, hooves cleaned, rug change and turn out.

Muck out stable and check water.

PM; Bring in, check over, rug change, feed and Hay.

Late evening; skip out, hay, groom, check over.

Part livery-where you do weekends (usually) Price would depend on what the arrangement was.

    DIY-you do everything €50-€80

Grass Livery- Your horse is out all the time and usually checked once or twice a day. €20-€50 pw

    Extras:

Wormers cost between €8-€25 depending on the brand generally you would use a different one each time to prevent immunity. I worm my horse every six weeks or so.

    Vaccinations:

    Once a year about €125

    Teeth Rasped:

At least once a year costs about €50

    Farrier:

Every 6 weeks or so a full set of shoes is about €65

    Vet;

    From €60 up

    Insurance:

I only have public liability insurance as my horse is 19 and the cover would not be worth it. €30 per year (I think) from the BHS

Horse: Horses cost anything from about €500 up. I would expect to pay about €2,500 for a nice safe first horse. Check out http://www.irishhorsetrader.com/

Tack: About €1,500 new and about €500 second hand

Rugs: About €250 for a newzeland, stable rug and cooler

    Boots: About €30

    Grooming kit: €25

Lead robe and head collar: €20

    First aid kit:€30

I could go on basicly its a money pit! Those figures will give you an estimate. Luckily you wont need everything every month. On average I spend about €230 a month when my horse is on grass and €600 when she is on full livery.

Just add details if you need anything else.

  3. >>i have no idea about livery cos i have land but i suppose what type of livery..

    >>vet could be  anything up ti 60 euro 4 a visit

    >>farrier about 30 euro

    >>depends on the acctual horse but anything from 1000 to 5000 would be normal.. but if its only as a hobby i would suggest no more than 2500 theres loads of horses for sale so.. donedeal.ie and buyandsell.ie are good sites to look through..

    >> ah sometimes sellers will includ tack with the horse but if not  you can buy second hand saddles for 200 - 400 and new ones from about 600 on.. (i bought mine second hand there great and u dont have to 'wear them in'

    >> after that what you need is:

grooming kit - 15 euro should cover the lot (dandy and body brush , plastic curry, mane comb, sponges etc...

    >> head collars.. nylon ones are bout 6 or 7 euro

    leadrope are about a fiver

    >> not sure if you are getting rugs or not but there are so many types and thre all different prices from 30 to about 200 euro!!

    >> after that then its up to you and weather you want thoughs extra unessential essentials that you just have to have!!
