I'm a minor and are going to be staying with my grandmother. I know how to speak spanish and everything. I just need to know how or where to change american money into lempiras. I would appreciate it if someone could tell me how the prices of common items in honduras are. I'll be living there for a few months so I'm looking for people to tell me how to get all the basic things I need. And just so everyone knows I can't ask my grandmother to do all these things, she's old and is a housekeeper so she's not allowed to go out that much.

  1. Check out the American Embassy web site! there's a lot of reading there to do, but it is super-helpful with everything from the type of bug spray and sunscreen you need to use to money exchange and papers you need. Well worth your time to look into it! Also, check into the console of Honduras.

Don't be surprised if things cost you more that aren't so expensive here, and the things that are expensive here can be real cheap there. Most 'American' things will be very expensive there, and their own items are generally cheaper, except for things they hand-make.

  2. Any bank will change american dollars, and at a better rate than the airport.  Prices for basic foods are very cheap, especially if you go to the public markets for produce like vegetables and eggs and things.  You can also just go to normal supermarkets and get everything there as well, no problems.  Do be carefull in SPS though, it can be a rather dodgy place.

  3. In San Pedro sula you can change money at the bank in the big shopping centres.  Be really careful in San Pedro Sula, it's not a very safe city, take taxis (be sure to bargain the price first).  Make sure you have your passport with you when changing money.  San Pedro is a pretty modern city so you can get everything there.  There are several large supermercados that carry everything - I can't remember exact prices, but it's definitely cheaper than the U.S.   take a taxi until you get used to the bus system.

  4. all the american airport has money exchange.

change for lempiras in Your way out ,and change for dollars in You way in.

DO NOT KEEP ANY DOLLAR WITH YOU, ONLY LOCAL CURRENCY(in this case Hondura's money.)

  5. uh, here is a web site that will provide you with more info email me if you need more

    http://www.internationalliving.com/bin/i...

and here is an email of an expert on honduras.

  6. You can exchange dollars for Lempiras as the airport when you fly in or at any bank. I just returned from Honduras a week ago and we took travelers checks and when we needed some cash we went to a bank to exchange a little bit.

As far as the rest of the question, where will you be in Honduras, what will you be doing, and what kind of "basic things" are you needing. I can help answer you question, just need a little more info.
