  1. This site is a good place to start your research, I found it off the consumer report website so it is reliable:

    http://www.greenerchoices.org/energysola...

  2. Go to germany, over there the gov made it cheaper to purchase solar panels and also you can sell your excess back into the power grid...so actually people are buying solar panels there in the form of a future business investment.

    The sad news if you cant go to germany...well it will cost u fair amount to get enough panels to run your house, also you need special batteries which excess power or when your not using it gets stored for latter use. So u will want to contact a business who installs the full systems and ask them to do a quote, so u can decide if its worth it.

    Basically governments are being very "let the consumers bite the bullet" if they want to go green, so its expensive and the technology is progressing like a absolute snail...we are probably 50 years behind thnx to fossil fuels.

    We should already have orbiting solar grids, since the technology to transmit electricity back to earth was tested in the 70's or 80's, forget which, but it was a 100% succes, meaning u didnt need a bloody cable or physical link to transfer the electricty from space to earth.

    In psace you have a 30-40% boost in electrical output and its 24/7 capable unlike in earth with weather and day/nite cycles. Thing is with fossil feuls still available, it was brushed of as to costly....

  3. have a look at the CAT  website, Centre for alternative technology in Machynlleth, wales, uk.  They have been doing research for years, have books and info, run courses etc and are less inclined to 'persuade' you like the companies that sell the products and want your money.

          Solar panel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

          Solar panels can be made so that the sun's energy excites the atoms in a silicon ... Solar panels were in use over one hundred years ago for hot water heating ...

  5. If you want to do this you probably want a grid connect system that sells excess power to the grid and you buy power when there is no sun, like at night.

    Look at the total number of kWh you use in a year.

    Now to decide on area, consider that a well designed square meter of solar panel will deliver 800 to 1200 watt hours per day  if you are getting an average insolation value of 1 kw.

    So that is 0.8 to 1.2 kWh /day... decide how many metres of panel you need to provide your annual usage. If you plan for slightly less power than you use, you can stretch to conserve to make up the difference.

  6. basically you buy one leave it in some light and thats it.

  7. If you hope to get a solar panel that can run appliances and air conditioning.. then you are not even close to being realistic about what solar panels can do.

    If you really want to install a solar panel array on your home, then you need to talk to a company in your area that designes and installes them because every installation is different.. so you won't get an answer here on Yahoo.

    You can expect to spend $20,000 to $30,000 that will provide enough solar power for the average home.

  8. they will never pay for themselves!!

  9. Im no expert but i do know enough to know that it depends on where you live, there is not enough light in some areas to justify all the expense

    if your running air con, the best way would to look at passive stack ventilation,(google it)  or intelligent control which only runs it when needed. or open the windows,

    also if your house has a loft space, and it isnt insulated, the temperate in there can get very hot in the summer. Get  insulation and this will act to contain this heat.

  10. having trouble finding a non commercial site!

    this is commercial but quite informative;

    and this is africa, but very good detail from my favourite charity practical action;

    edit;

    at last! here's the centre for alternative technology fact sheet;
