  1. I was a PCV 1971-1972. My daughter is one today.

It is a government agency that sends US Citizens with skills to developing countries that have asked for people with those skills. The financial benefits are minimal; you get a living allowance, medical and dental care and a token payment at the end to tide you over until you get a job or go to graduate school. The personal benefits are enormous.

You have to volunteer and be acceped. They accept roughly one out of every four applicants. 92 percent of all PCVs have a college degree. The other 8 percent have 10 - 50 years of experience.

The official web site is graphics-heavy but comprehensive:

If you are interested, you can read about my time as a PCV in Sarawak, on the island of Borneo, 1971 - 1972:

There is much more there than I can paste here. It isn't all about my experiences. I search Y!A for the phrase "Peace Corps" every week. I have a page devoted to the questions that come up the most frequently. The page "Peace Corps Links" has a link to the Returned PCV web ring, which has 40+ other RPCV sites.

You can Google "Peace Corps Volunteer Blog" to find sites about more current experiences.

  2. This probably isn't the forum for all your questions to be answered.

    You should go to www.peacecorps.gov.

If you have anything specific you should post another question.
