  1. rite above the lower gear assembly, there should be two bolts holding the assembly to the lower unit. take these out and the gear assembly along with the shaft will slide rite out. you might have to disconnect your gear shifte bar, which is located behind a small plate about 6 inches under the motor on the side of the lower unit.

now when you look at the shaft that is sticking out of the top of the gear assembly you will see a housing for the impeller with the shaft comming out thru the middle of it that is retained by a bolt or bolts. remove them and pull the impeller housing up and off.

pull old impeller out, examine the bearing around the shaft, to insure no water is leaking into your gears. after this re-install the new one by turning it while you press down, it wont just slide in without turning it a bit. re-install impeller housing.

now just re-install the rest in opposite order that you took it off.                                            good luck

  2. Buy a shop manual, you will be glad you did. Some areas of this repair are tricky!!!

  3. Did this last spring. On a Mercury 50 HP. I personally would buy a repair manual for it.Just mainly for the placement of the bolts there are many bolts and things that had to be removed before you could remove the lower housing. When we replaced the impeller naturally it was larger than the housing so  put dish soap on the impeller and rotate the fins to face the same direction, doesn't matter which direction longs they are all facing the same way.The dish soap should help slide it in to the housing ,then start to rotate fins in the same direction.Once you do that, the hardest part if any is just realigning the lower unit shaft into the gears of the motor.Once you get that done fill it back up with lower unit lube until it comes out of a hole and cap off.Test it out and you should be done. But i do recommend getting the book to be able to locate all the bolts an will explain how to refill the lower unit with fluid.Good Luck.
