I'm taking English 207, Children's Literature. Part of our group project is to choose a novel and present it to the class, and do a lesson plan on it. We choose Harry Potter and THe Sorcerer's Stone for 5th graders. Our group is having trouble...tips or suggestions are welcome thank you in advance

  1. Harry Potter is much too advanced for many 5th graders.  I teach 5th and my smartest ones read Harry Potter.  What exactly do you need help with?  Are you doing a book study?  You can focus on character traits, you can find online activities and printables, things like that.  Maybe have them writg about what the students would do in place of one of the characters, discuss why you think the characters did what they did.  I would suggest getting the book on cd/tape so that the lower kids can keep up.

  2. How about a spell book of vocabulary words.

  3. that's a pretty stupid choice for a book. why not pick something with some cultural relevance? it's nice that harry potter gets kids to read but there's not really much to it. however, if you're set on using it try doing a character analysis. compare and contrast different characters.
