Why do you think my dad checked the oil and water in my moms car for her before she left to go to walmart one afternoon?

Maybe because he's an unreconstructed male chauvinist pig and thinks it's a man's job to take care of the car for his wife.

uhhhh.... maybe he just wanted to make sure the car was working properly and the oil was alright

Maybe he wanted her to get the oil and water changed and filled respectively at Wal-Mart. He was checking the levels to insure that they were replenished to atleast the same level.
