I did online school for the first time last year after being homeschooled before, and I barely passed my courses because I couldn't get motivated. Now I'm doing an online English 11 summer course and I'm 3 weeks behind because we were on vacation. I can't catch up because I keep getting distracted by the computer! Like by games, facebook, and stuff like this! Or I read or clean my room etc., but it's usually the computer. Any ideas?

  1. Set up some goals for yourself!! For example, no computer time whatsoever until you have completed an assignment for the day... then allow yourself an HOUR to play - set a timer and stick with it no matter what! Then go do another assignment.. You can work yourself up to doing 2 or 3 assignments before you can have free computer time

  2. Just stop.  have some self control.  Resist the urges to play games, facebook, etc until the work is done.  You could ask your parents to help you with your self control, but at your age it shouldn't be necessary.  You know what you have to do, just do it.

  3. Bribery. You allow yourself 10mins on Facebook when you finish each chapter of your workbook, or something. Taking regular breaks isn't necessarily a bad thing. Few people can sit and concentrate for more than an hour at anything, even when they are interested.

It could also be that you have chosen your subjects poorly and ought to do something different, or online schooling is not a good fit for you. Not that you can wimp out on English, however you go about studying it.

  4. First thing is that motivation comes from your own motive: what do you want with your homeschooling/courses? Identify it. Write it out.

Second is identify all the distractions, like you've done, and figure out a specific plan of action to stop yourself. You might write notes reminding you of your goal, little posters with specific rules you set for yourself (no Facebook until after 3 hours of work have been done, for example).

It's really all about deciding what is the behaviour you'd like to exhibit then catch yourself when you are going against that and make yourself do what you have decided you want to be doing instead. Will you feel discomfort? Yes. You have a choice: you can avoid the discomfort by choosing games/Facebook, or you can do as you had decided, all the while feeling the discomfort. Feeling whatever negative feeling it is you feel when you think about working is OKAY. Just feel it and move on to what you know you need to be doing.
