  1. Basically before 9/11 the Megalopolis in the Northeast  (Boston,New York, Newark,Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington D.C.) was like mainly gridlock or bumper to bumper because those areas have the worst conjestion out of the rest of the country in Air Traffic. During and after 9/11 about 5 years later, conjestion in the Northeast had to been eased up on the fear of any other terror attack so that the military can have priority access over the Northeast in the case of a terror attack in the air.

During the 9/11 tragedy, all continental US flights were grounded and all foreign incoming flights to the US were diverted to Canada.

Passengers in the United States were taking flights like any other normal day before 9/11 while after 9/11, more than half of all Americans did not want to travel by airplane again due to the risk of another 9/11 happening.

To this date, The U.S. now have  less of a way in gridlock over the Northeast as some of the major carriers had to move their flight path a little west or east after following 9/11 to clear way for any military aircrafts. All flights are back where they can flight in and out to foreign countries with nothing more than your plane ticket and passport. As of 2006, Americans feel that air travel is deemed safe again as most have put the 9/11 fears of flying behind them.

Statistics of passengers flying out of Washing Reagan can be found here:  http://www.metwashairports.com/reagan/ab...

You will notice between 2001 and 2002, passengers flying in 2002 dropped by about 400,000 out of Reagan National. Now take a look at previous years  Mail and Freight in lbs.

Since the Federal Government banned alot of items being shipped and also carried onboard planes,  it have cut back drastically on weight of freight and mail. For Mail  from over 43 million pounds to  almost 7 million and for freight, from almost 12 million pounds to just over 6 million pounds.
