I need opinions - Large Hadron Collider - kill us or help us?

Large Hadron Collider is a machine in Sweden thats going to smash two itty bitty little atoms together at insane speeds. the result will either be a lot of scientific data and some awesome answers about space and time or it'll create a black hole right here on earth.....

what do you think?

  1. The black hole theory is just an urban myth, and a theory.

Black holes themselves are a hypothesis.

So when the LHC activates it might create a mini black hole.

But it will be so unstable that as soon as it is created, it will evaporate, giving off hawking radiation. In other words all that the LHC will do is help us with our knowledge.

  2. what do you have against Swedes?

okay, there is that whole "Lukfisk" scandal... but we lived.

the LHC is more safe than your car.

    buckle your seatbelt.

  3. It is actually in Switzerland.  They intend to create micro black holes which will disappear instantly due to Hawking Radiation.

A black hole doesn't draw in anything that is not within its Event Horizon.  The Schwarzchild Radius of a micro black hole would be so tiny that nothing would have a chance to enter it before it disappeared.  I believe it will give us valuable information.

"Giddings has co-authored a paper documenting his study of the safety of microscopic black holes that might possibly be produced by the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), which is nearing completion in Europe. The paper, co-authored by Michelangelo Mangano of the European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN), which is building the world's largest particle collider, investigates hypothesized behavior of tiny black holes that might be created by high-energy collisions in the CERN particle accelerator.

If they appear at all, these black holes would exist for "about a nano-nano-nanosecond," Giddings said, adding that they would have no effect of consequence. However, the paper studies whether there could be any large-scale effects in an extremely hypothetical situation where the black holes don't evaporate.

The Giddings/Mangano study concludes that such microscopic black holes would be harmless. In fact, he added, nature is continuously creating LHC-like collisions when much higher-energy cosmic rays collide with the Earth's atmosphere, with the Sun, and with other objects such as white dwarfs and neutron stars. If such collisions posed a danger, the consequences for Earth or these astronomical objects would have become evident already, Giddings said.

The LHC, near Geneva, Switzerland, is expected to begin operations this summer. It will collide proton beams at levels of energy never before produced in a particle accelerator. Those results will then be studied for clues to new forces of nature, and possibly even extra dimensions of space. The first collision of beams is likely to be in September. The $8 billion project has taken 14 years."

  4. i think the scared people are just showing a normal human reaction.. .to fear what they don't understand

no were not gonna be sucked into a black hole... the very idea is absolutely ridiculous... first of all, if it WERE to create a black hole, not only would it be tiny (possibly microscopic) it wouldn't live for more then a single SECOND.... it would be far too unstable to remain...

wouldn't be strong enough to suck in any of the earth or over throw earths gravity, therefore it will DIE almost immediately IF it even happens.

  5. I think you should look up 'particle accelerators'.... check out the history of them.... and how they work... and what they look for..... and any safety issues they've had thus far..... they've been in use since 1937 and you're just NOW hearing about one????.... guess that means they've not been destroying Earth all these years?????.... Learn from the real stuff not the scare-tactics of a few.....

  6. hm i dont believe in that eaither.....they just wanna scare u just in case if they do drop one of their dangery bombs they can say it was the blk holes foult thats why the world is ending lol .....

  7. NERDS!

  8. You have your facts wrong. The machine is on the border between France and Switzerland, nowhere near Sweden. It will not collide not atoms, but protons. In the event that mini black holes are created, they will be tiny, and 'evaporate' in less than a second. There is no chance that the machine will cause any harm to anyone or anything, or the scientists would not be doing this. Do you think they're suicidal, or inept? They are neither. They know what they're doing.
