  1. Make them shorter Good night

  2. There's always a couple different ways of going about this. Whether it's a "handicap" event or a flat "race". By today's standards $10 is not much for an entry fee if you "are" charging by the game. If you "aren't" charging by the game (as opening up bar-boxes, etc.) $20 is reasonable. Players like the idea of the larger payback.

As far as the calcutta... the players that pass (no bids on them) we put them all together at the end and sell them as one package. There are times when 8 or 9 players will go for 10-bucks. And the buyer gets 100% if any of them placed.

In addition: we have run "sidepots". For an extra $20 the players are betting that they cash. This is a "winner-take-all" pot. If none actually cash, then the player that finished highest in the field still wins the "sidepot."

You know as well as I there are players that sign up for the tournament knowing what to expect. And then you'll always have a couple that think it should be run another way. As long as they're in your house they play by your rules. End of story.

Now I have to get prepared for mine for tomorrow. Good luck, Jay

  3. Look at the crowd if they are regulars for the most part stay where you are if you want players up it to 20-50 but at that it will bring some shooters that will only be in your bar on tournament night ( I know I've seen me do it)

With a calcutta either mass sell no-bids or have a friend take them for the no-bid price of $1.00. Use a friend because the house can't buy players.

  4. Depends on your payout amount for the winners. Are you paying individuals or teams or what? Just make sure you cut the money where people who win get enough back to make it worth their time.

  5. Ten is the same that we charge and we do not get any where 36 players.....the house will often add maybe $50 to the "kitty"....$10 sounds alright to me....do you have a side "9 ball break" pot?....$1 or $2 to get a chance....two names are drawn and they get 2 turns to snap it ....first come first serve!.....can really add up quickly......if you truly are getting 36 players I would leave it alone....any more and you might lose the numbers....personal opinion......the tournament is there to have the competition but to also bring them in.....the beer, drinks and food will make it up for the house....I say leave it alone that is really a lot of players.....we do double it to $20 the first weekend of the month!......the 9 ball break money rolls over to the next week if no one makes it.....adds up pretty fast!

  6. I think $10 sounds low...$15 or $20 shouldn't be too much to ask, and everyone in the money will appreciate the extra...That's a good turn-out, Johnny...I only just learned about that Calcutta thing in the Viking tournament last month...pretty cool.

    p.s. I liked Jay's answer.

  7. $10 is a very fair entry fee.  I attend quite a few tournaments, and that seams to be the normal amount for a bar type tournament.  Like you said, if you raise it to high, you will run people off.
